"Germany is to celebrate 2017's bicentenary of the bicycle with the issuing of a twenty Euro coin featuring the Laufmaschine, the "running machine" that fifty years later started to morph into the bike as we know it. The Laufmaschine – or draisine – was invented by Baron Karl von Drais of Mannheim, Germany, in 1817.
Drais was a civil servant who created his machine as a horse substitute. In 1815, dust from the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia covered the Northern Hemisphere causing the so-called "year without a summer" of 1816, which led to famines in Europe and beyond in 1817. A shortage of oats in Germany forced the slaughter of many horses. These themes are on the €20 coin, which will be released in July next year.
The German finance ministry had run a competition to decide on the coin's design, and this was judged by, among others, the eminent cycle-historian Professor Dr. Hans-Erhard Lessing of Koblenz."

Well the news is that Triathlon has kicked Football off the top-spot with the latest information revealing the following are the top 5 most requested designs:

5. Rowing

The Brownlee Effect?
Of course you might be forgiven for thinking that Brownlee brothers’ success at the Olympics boosted demand and perhaps it played a small part. However, the biggest influence is how the Royal Mint has released the coins into circulation.
Unfortunately, we are unlikely to know the final figures of how many of each coin was distributed for another 3 and a half years, when the Royal Mint releases mintage information but I am pretty sure top 5 most wanted will be amongst the lowest mintage numbers."

"In Erinnerung an das 200-jährige Jubiläum des Fahrrads, dessen Ausgangspunkt die Laufmaschine von Karl Drais aus dem Jahr 1817 darstellt, erscheint im Jahr 2017 diese 20 Euro Gedenkmünze in Deutschland. Das Motiv der Münze, das besagte Laufmaschine mit ihrem Erfinder zeigt, wurde von dem Künstler Friedrich Brenner gestaltet. Geprägt wird die Silbermünze in Karlsruhe (G).

Der plastisch gelungene Entwurf zeigt die Laufmaschine von Karl Drais in ihrer Anwendung durch einen Draisinenreiter. Das Motiv stellt die Erfindung als Reitpferdersatz in den historischen Kontext: Vulkanausbruch des Tambora (Indonesien) mit Klimakatastrophe, Missernte und Pferdesterben. Durch die Vulkansilhouette sowie den realistischen Grasboden entstehen Elemente, die dem Münzbild eine horizontale Struktur geben. Die Typografie fügt sich sensibel in die Gesamtkonzeption ein. Dies gilt auch für die Rückseite. Der künstlerisch überzeugende Adler korrespondiert in seiner Reliefartigkeit hervorragend mit der Vorderseite. Die Gestaltung des Adlers ist würdig in seiner Darstellung."
